Intro to Geri-Duty
Geriatric Duty – or Geri-Duty as I like to affectionately call it – is a term I use to describe being the primary caregiver for a loved one with dementia. Whether you were summoned gently with a lot of hints throughout the course of several years, or if it came via overnight delivery with a big red stamp marked urgent, you still were served with a duty that will be life changing and demand your time, your talent, your patience and most of all your love.
My name is Raquel Molina and I have been the primary caregiver for my 87 year old aunt with dementia for the past three years. Prior to that, I had been gradually handling various aspects of her affairs as her cognition began to decline. I also have the privilege of working with the elderly as administrator of a state funded program to help seniors age with dignity in their home when possible.
